Meet the people behind the stories.
Roots & Rhythms brings together lived experience, cultural knowledge, curiosity and research to explore how people eat, heal and live across cultures and generations.
Our writers aren't here to tell you there's one right way to live. They're here to ask better questions, follow interesting stories and help make sense of what we find.
Founder & Editor, Roots & Rhythms
Tami Douglas is the founder and editor of Roots & Rhythms. Born and raised in Jamaica and now living in the United States, she writes about the foods, remedies, traditions, family rhythms and everyday practices we inherit, adapt and sometimes question.
Her curiosity usually starts with a simple question: Why do we do that?
From there, she follows the story through culture, history, lived experience and what we know now.
Her favorite stories usually live somewhere between "that's how we always did it" and "wait...but why?"
Have a Story for Roots & Rhythms?
Some of the best knowledge doesn't start in a research paper. It starts in a kitchen.A family tradition.Something your grandmother always did.
A food people misunderstand.
A remedy that's been passed down for generations.
A practice from your culture that you've always wondered about.
Or simply a story that makes you stop and ask, "Wait...why do we do that?"
Roots & Rhythms welcomes pitches from guest writers with something thoughtful, useful or culturally interesting to share.
We're especially interested in stories about food and food culture, traditional remedies, family and caregiving, cultural practices, migration and diaspora, everyday wellness, and the traditions we carry forward.
You don't have to be a professional writer. You do need to have a story worth telling.
